As parents new or experience there are so many new things through the growth of our children. Every child grows differently but there are a few common points that they share together:
They have natural aquatic instincts then in water:
Babies are born with the ability to swim. They naturally hold their breath underwater and kick and flap their arms in the water!
If you were to take your baby to a swimming lesson you would be able to see their birth talents after only a few lessons. It is truly fascinating.
2. Red is the first colour they recognize
Young babies do not see colours as vivid as adults or even older children. The first colour babies recognize is the colour red because of it’s boldness, this happens in the first few weeks. When choose baby items such as toys, books or clothes try choosing more bolder colours.
3. Newborns have 300 bones.
As many of us know, the adult human body has 206 bones whereas a newborn baby has 300 bones in it’s body. This is because certain bones of a baby eventually fuse together as your baby grows. Many of these bones are made of cartilage which is slowly replace by bone mass.
4. Newborns grow 1.5cm each month
New born babies grow a whopping 1.5 cm each month in their first year of life. Most Newborns double their weight in 4 months and then triple it on their first birthday. When babies do not grow by the standard growth chart it could be a sign that your baby’s diet or health needs to be checked.
5. 3 weeks and under don’t produce tears
It is normal for new born babies not to shed tears for the first few months of life. They are still developing their tear ducts.
6. Their stomachs are as big as a walnut.
At 3 days old your newborn’s stomach is about the size of a walnut. It is able to accommodate about 0.5 to 1 ounce (oz) of liquids.
7. Sleep on average 5400hrs in first year
The saying that newborns only sleep, eat and poo is not at all a lie. In fact newborn babies sleep on average 5400hrs in their first year of life!
8. Only human babies smile at their parents.
Out of all the species on earth human babies are the only ones to exchange smiles with their parents or guardians. Between 6 and 8 weeks of life, babies develop a "social smile" -- an intentional gesture of warmth meant just for you.
9. About 3360 diapers are used in the first year
You baby will go through 3360 diapers in the first year of life. Being conscious of this large number of waste looking for re-usable diaper alternatives is angelic.
